Pop culture's
influence on modern life will be covered this fall in a series of
live satellite broadcasts at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf
Road. Sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society,
seminars will be held 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., Tuesday evenings. Seminars
are free and open to the public.
The series
begins Sept. 28 with "(Mis)understanding History: Shaping Modern
Myth and Popular Values," with Dr. Robert McElvaine, who describes
the so-called "culture war" as a false conflict. According to McElvaine,
the forces of pop culture - often accused of weakening traditional
values - actually work with U.S. corporate interests to maximize consumerism.
Other
seminars include "Creating and Marketing Youth: Youth Music and
Culture in 20th Century America," with Dr. Tricia Rose (Oct. 12);
"The Empire of Images: Growing Up Male and Female in a World Dominated
By Popular Culture," with Dr. Susan Bordo (Oct. 26); "Courting
Disaster? Changing Values About Love, Sex, and Marriage," with
author Stephanie Coontz (Nov. 9) and "Sports in Popular Culture:
Are We Winning or Losing?," with Dr. Richard Lapchick (Nov. 16).
Additional information on each speaker and their presentation may
