Public Relations Courses Offered At Oakton

Discover the importance of public relations in shaping public opinion and consumer behavior in two courses being offered this spring at Oakton Community College.

Public Relations I (MKT 244 050, Touch-Tone 04014), an eight-week course starting January 14, will introduce students to the history and evolution of public relations, and explore basic public relations techniques and tactics. There will be a strong emphasis on writing and learning how to shape and deliver messages through various media.

Public Relations II (MKT 244 050, Touch-Tone 04021), an eight-week course starting March 18, will help students better understand how to integrate public relations into marketing programs; organize and promote special events; develop publications and Web sites; work with television, radio, and other broadcast media; and manage crises and public issues.

Classes will be held Tuesday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. and are geared toward working professionals, students considering a career in PR or integrated marketing communications, or anyone interested in becoming a more discriminating consumer.

"Promoting a positive public image is more important than ever to corporations, nonprofit organizations, and community groups," says course instructor Deborah Popely, president of Popely & Company Inc., a Des Plaines-based marketing communications and consulting firm. "These courses are designed to help anyone more effectively shape and direct communications with customers, employees, the media, and the community."

For more than 20 years Popely has worked with corporations, charitable foundations, associations, arts organizations, social service agencies, advocacy groups, government agencies, and political figures on a wide range of local, regional, and national issues. She frequently leads seminars for professionals in the field and has developed and presented a comprehensive training program for arts marketers nationwide.
