The Oakton
Community College men's basketball team expects to vex its opponents
with quickness in the coming season, says head coach Rick Kilby. With
a nucleus of four returning sophomores and a solid corps of freshmen,
the Raiders are poised to make waves when the season tips off Tuesday,
Nov. 4.
"We're
quicker than 90 percent of the teams out there," says Kilby. "Quickness
is about putting pressure on the opponent. We know we can do that.
We also have good smarts and sophomores who know the game. Nothing
makes up for a year of experience."
Returning
players include Maine South alum John Vigna, a 5' 11" point guard
and first-team Skyway all-conference selection; Glenbrook South graduate
Jetter Gibson, a 6' 2" returning starter; Maine West alum Kevin Vail,
a 6' 4" starter who was forced out with an injury early last season;
and Kevin Demos, a 5' 6" graduate of Christian Liberty Academy.
Joining
the team are freshmen Andrew Johnson, a 6' 3" all-conference player
from Taft High who also led the Oakton Community College Summer League
in scoring; William Stephenson, a 6' 5" All-Blue North MVP from Sullivan
High; and Joe Gathings, a 6' 1" transfer student from Kennedy King
College.
The Raiders
embark on the 2003-04 campaign at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 when they travel
to Triton. Oakton's first home game is Nov. 11 against Joliet with
a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Raiders start conference play Jan. 6 when they
host Morton at 7:15 p.m. See
