Oakton
Community College and Roosevelt University have entered into a new
partnership to facilitate teacher certification in secondary education,
officials of both institutions announced. The unique program will
allow qualified students to take upper level secondary education courses
from Roosevelt at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, leading to teacher
certification.
"Few
conditions of learning success are more important than the proximity
of learning opportunities," said Margaret Lee, president of Oakton.
"This partnership delivers such an opportunity right to our front
door, and shows one of the many creative alternatives to a traditional
four-year education."
"We
are pleased to bring the programs in our College of Education on-site
to Oakton," said Charles R. Middleton, president of Roosevelt. "The
College of Education is one of 21 in the state of Illinois accredited
by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, so
Oakton students will benefit from outstanding faculty and academic
quality."
Starting
in spring 2005, any District 535 student who is accepted into Roosevelt's
College of Education for secondary certification may qualify to enroll
in the courses at Oakton. In the first semester, students can take
Seminar in Secondary Education. Additional classes will be
offered in future semesters.
To be
eligible, Oakton students must meet Roosevelt's admission requirements
and transfer to Roosevelt. Eligible students will have completed at
least 50 semester hours with a minimum 2.50 grade point average, and
pass the Illinois Test of Basic Skills. Students should consult with
their advisor.
