Oakton Professor Joins Leadership Program

Laura Saret, Ed.D., professor of computer technologies and information systems at Oakton Community College, has been chosen to participate in LEADERS, an international program for women in higher education sponsored by the National Institute for Leadership Development.

Since joining Oakton in 1981, Saret has demonstrated her leadership abilities in teaching and in professional and curriculum development. She served for more than 10 years as the faculty coordinator for professional development and was instrumental in the creation of the Oakton's Teaching Learning Center. She also was appointed to a statewide task force to evaluate teacher education programs from preschool to grade 12. She is the current president of the Oakton's Full-Time Faculty Association and the author of several books, including "Programming Logic for Business," published by McGraw-Hill in 2001. Saret holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and an Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University.

Designed to enhance the skills participants need to assume major decision-making roles in their institutions, the year-long LEADERS program includes practice in planning, budgeting, supervision, and human relations skills, as well as discussions with national experts on the issues confronting higher education. Saret will be mentored by George Chirempes, Oakton vice president for business and finance, to work on projects that will aid the College and foster individual personal growth.

LEADERS participants are chosen for their professional abilities, their interests in advancement in higher education, and the quality of their proposed projects. The National Institute for Leadership Development is recognized by colleges, universities, and businesses for its visionary, holistic programs that produce leaders who effectively challenge assumptions, eliminate barriers, and create new pathways to successful students.
