Stay active during the winter months by enrolling in fitness and recreation classes offered by Oakton Community College's Emeritus Program for older adults.Scheduled at the Skokie Chamber of Commerce, 5006 Oakton St., are two levels of tai chi chih, the ancient Chinese exercise system that integrates the mind, body, and spirit to balance and increase energy. Tai Chi Chih, Part I (PED E30-71, Touch-Tone 06400), a six-week class that introduces the first 10 movements and the final pose, meets from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Mondays, beginning Jan. 6. The course fee is $72. Continuing Tai Chi Chih (PED E31-71, Touch-Tone 06529), a 12-week class that reviews and refines the movements previously covered and introduces the remaining movements, meets from 11 a.m. to noon on Mondays, beginning Jan. 6. The course fee is $144.
Other fitness and recreation classes beginning soon include Beginning Bridge, Advanced Bridge, Beginning Hatha Yoga, Intermediate Hatha Yoga, and Yoga in the Middle, offered during winter break for students of all practice levels.
Students age 60 and above who reside within Oakton's district pay half-tuition for Emeritus noncredit classes. Those who have registered for an Oakton credit class within the last three years or an Alliance for Lifelong Learning noncredit class within the last five years may register using the Touch-Tone system by dialing 847-635-1616. Touch-Tone registration requires payment using a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover).
