African shaman Malidoma Patrice Somé, Ph.D.,
keynotes the 16th Annual Men’s Day Conference,
8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 23, at Oakton Community
College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.
A West African medicine man and author, Somé was abducted as
a child and taken to a mission school where he spent 15 years being
indoctrinated to the ways of European thought and worship. Upon returning
to his village, Somé embarked on a mission to share his tribe’s
ancestral knowledge with cultures that have become disconnected from
the richness of communal life.
The 2008 Men’s Day theme, “Ritual and Spirit in the Modern
World,” focuses on issues of ritual, tradition, and spirituality.
More than 20 workshop sessions are offered.
Registration for Men’s Day is $65 in advance (deadline Nov.
17) and includes lunch. Registration is $90 at the door. Although
this program is designed for men, women are welcome.
