Margaret B. "Peg" Lee, president of Oakton Community College, has
accepted an invitation from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to attend the U.S. University
Presidents Summit, Jan. 5 and 6, in Washington, D.C. Fewer than 100
U.S. college and university presidents have been invited to the summit,
to help develop an action plan for encouraging more U.S. students
to study abroad, and to encourage more foreign students to enroll
in U.S. universities.
"This
is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of critical conversations
about the importance of shaping the future of our increasingly interdependent
world through global education," said Lee. "Oakton's mission includes
educating all students to be 'capable global citizens.' Our student
population and the district we serve are both incredibly diverse."
More
than 80 different languages are spoken at the nine high schools in
Oakton's district, according to College research. While small numbers
of students speak languages such as Thai, Burmese, Finnish, and Tamil,
the top 10 languages spoken include Spanish, Polish, Korean, Urdu,
Russian, Assyrian, Gujarati, Filipino (Tagalog), Greek, and Malayalam.
