Oakton Hosts Terminal Illness Symposium

Social workers, counselors, therapists, clergy, nurses, bereavement specialists, and other professionals who deal with families anticipating the death of a loved one are invited to attend a hospice care symposium, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.

Presented by Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter and Oakton's Alliance for Lifelong Learning, "Patient-/Family-Centered Care at the End of Life" is designed to educate participants about available services and techniques to support the entire family when a relative is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Participants will gain a better understanding of:

  • How hope provides an opportunity for emotional growth as families cope with a terminal illness;
  • The role of music in anxiety and pain management;
  • Effective techniques to help children cope with loss and continue to grow through their grief; and
  • The various dimensions of hospice care and its emphasis on respecting patient and family wishes regarding quality of life.

Registration fee is $85 per single registration; a reduced fee of $75 per person is applied when two or more employees from the same agency register for this program at the same time. Registration includes lunch and materials and continuing education units (6.0 clock hours) for social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, registered nurses, and nursing home administrators. Teachers will receive 6.0 continuing professional development units.

Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter, formerly Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of the North Shore, recently changed its corporate name and moved its headquarters to Glenview.
