Enrollment
is now open at Oakton Community College for a new program designed
for teacher aides seeking compliance with the No Child Left Behind
Act. The new associate of applied science degree for paraprofessional
educators (AASPE) is being offered for the first time at Oakton starting
in fall 2004. Classes begin August 23.
Among
the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act is that all K-12 education
paraprofessionals - better known as teacher aides - hired after January
8, 2002, must be "highly qualified" by the end of the 2005-2006 academic
year. Students who complete Oakton's program graduate with the necessary
credentials and skills to qualify them for employment in diverse educational
settings, including public, private, charter, magnet, and alternative
schools.
The 62-credit-hour
program is not intended to transfer to a four-year college or university,
however, most course credits should transfer. Course details may be
found at www.oakton.edu/acad/dept/bssd/education.htm.
Students who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree and teacher certification
should meet with an Oakton advisor.
In-person
registration during summer is Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. -
8 p.m. at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road, and at the Ray
Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. Students with current
applications or who have attended Oakton within the last three years
may register online at webreg.oakton.edu,
or by Touch-Tone at 847-635-1616.
