Award-winning author Vicki Crompton-Tetter, co-chair of the Iowa Crime Victim Assistance Board, will present "Reflections on Teen Dating Violence: It Does Happen Here," 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The workshop is part of a continuing series on domestic violence presented by Oakton's Alliance for Lifelong Learning and the Circuit Court of Cook County's Second Municipal District Family Violence Coordinating Council.

Open to community advocates and professionals working in the field of domestic violence, participants will gain a better understanding about:

  • National trends in teen dating violence;
  • Teen dating violence developmental issues;
  • The role of restorative justice as an intervention technique;
  • Ways to engage male teens as allies in intervention; and
  • The impact of teen dating violence on schools and communities.

Crompton-Tetter's 15-year-old daughter was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend in 1986. Since then, Crompton-Tetter has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and 20/20, and given more than 2,000 seminars focusing on the problem of violence in dating relationships.

Registration fee of $30 includes lunch and continuing education credits for eligible social workers, counselors, and other professionals. For more information, call Oakton's Alliance for Lifelong Learning at 847-635-1808.
