Neal
Sipkovsky, men's tennis coach at Oakton Community College, is the
National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV Coach of the
Year.
Oakton
finished first in a seven-team bracket at the recent NJCAA Region
IV Tournament at Harper College, earning awards for Sipkovsky, a 1997
graduate of Maine South High School, and freshman David Bukowski of
Mount Prospect, who was named NJCAA Region IV Player of the Year for
his victory in No. 1 singles play.
The Raiders
notched three more top tournament wins as sophomore Bladimir Hernandez
of Chicago took first place in No. 2 singles action, sophomore Billy
Wangerow of Hoffman Estates won at No. 3 singles, and Bukowski teamed
with Hernandez to finish first in No. 1 doubles play. Bukowski (13-2)
also was named the Skyway Conference Most Valuable Player with his
win at the Skyway Conference Tournament April 24 at Elgin Community
College.
The Raider's
first place finish at the NJCAA Region IV qualified Oakton for the
2004 NJCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship, which starts May
9. This is the second straight year Oakton has qualified for the national
tournament.
Oakton
finished the regular season 6-2 in dual meets and 3-1 in Skyway Conference
play.
