Learn
how to handle the stress of a terrorist attack by attending a conference
cosponsored by Oakton Community College's Alliance for Lifelong Learning.
The conference, "Aboard the U.S.S. Cole: A Case Study in Organizational
and Psychological Strategies After the Threat of Terrorism," is
scheduled 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22 at New Trier High School,
7 Happ Road, Northfield.
The seminar
describes the psychological techniques employed by disaster responders
during the terrorist attack on the U.S.S. Cole in Yemen in 2000. The
program is designed for social workers, emergency responders, counselors,
and teachers.
Keynote
speaker Cmdr. John Kennedy was in charge of a nine-member stress management
team sent to Yemen to work with the U.S.S. Cole crew as they waited
for their ship to be towed to safety. Kennedy also implemented stress
management interventions for hundreds of Navy personnel affected by
the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States. Presently,
Kennedy oversees an integrated stress management program for the U.S.
Marine Corps.
The seminar
is cosponsored by New Trier Township High School; Veteran's Affairs
Medical Center at North Chicago; Chicago Center for the Study of Groups
and Organizations; the North Chicago Rotary Club and Rosalind Franklin
School of Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.
