News Release |
This February, Oakton Community College will join 550 colleges and universities around the world in hosting benefit performances of Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues, as part of the V-Day 2002 College Campaign. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 16, and at 7 p.m. on Feb.17, at Oakton's Performing Arts Center, 1600 E. Golf Rd., Des Plaines. The V-Day College Campaign raises awareness and money to help stop violence against women and girls by supporting and revitalizing the work of existing anti-violence organizations. Since Valentine's Day 1998, when a group of talented theater, film and music celebrities gathered in New York to perform the play and raise funds to stop violence against women, "V-Day" has been commemorated each year with special performances and other events that celebrate women. This year Oakton will donate 90 percent of the proceeds to local shelters and rape crisis centers, with 10 percent earmarked for the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA).
The Vagina Monologues is based on Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women of different ages, backgrounds and ethnicities about their sexuality, and explores the myriad emotions these women experience in their everyday lives.
"The Vagina Monologues runs the gamut from wildly funny to deeply moving," says Kathleen Carot, assistant professor of speech and theater, and director of this year's production. " It is a life-changing experience for the performers and audience alike."
Tickets are $15 for the general public, $12 for students and seniors, and can be purchased through the Oakton Box Office, (847) 635-1900. Oakton's Performing Arts Department and Women's Institute are sponsoring the performances.
