A
volunteer tutor program at Oakton Community College has received a
$73,000 grant from the Illinois Secretary of State's office to promote
adult literacy, officials said. The grant allows Oakton's Volunteer
in Teaching Adults (VITA) program to continue helping adults who wish
to improve their English speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Each semester, Oakton offers free English as a Second Language (ESL)
classes to approximately 3,000 adults whose native language is not
English. The announced grant will be used to fund volunteer training
and purchase needed instructional supplies.
Upcoming
volunteer training is scheduled 6:30 - 10 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7,
and 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Ray Hartstein
Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. VITA tutors should be able to
commit between two and six hours weekly, and to work with teachers
in the English as a Second Language (ESL) and Learn to Read to Learn
(LTRTL) programs. Tutors may volunteer weekdays, evenings, and weekends
at a variety of locations.
