War and Religion are Topics of New Courses at Oakton


The Oakton Community College Emeritus Program explores the world's religious and cultural history with several new courses offered this semester.

Europe's Struggle Between the Right and the Left (HIS E88-71, Touch-Tone 08738) invites students to join Jim O'Neill to discuss issues and events occurring between 1919-1939, including the Russian Civil War, the German Separatists Revolt, the Russo-Polish War, and the Spanish Civil War. This three-week class meets from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mondays, beginning March 3, at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. The course fee is $40.

The Middle East and North Africa in the 20th Century (HIS E92-71, Touch-Tone 09003), taught by George Lungu, surveys the history and politics of these regions, including such topics as culture, society, and nationalism; geostrategy and colonialism; and Islam and the politics of religion. This eight-week class meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning March 31, at the Ray Hartstein Campus. The course fee is $100.

The Book of the Beginnings: How to Read the Book of Genesis (PHL E47-71, Touch-Tone 08742) examines this ancient collection of stories within the context of Middle Eastern literature. Join Marianka Fousek, Th.D., an independent scholar of religion, for this six-week class, which meets from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Feb. 13, at the Skokie Chamber of Commerce, 5006 Oakton St., Skokie. The course fee is $80.

Other history and philosophy courses offered this semester include The Far East: Prelude to Pearl Harbor (HIS E89), The Gospels for the Critical Reader (PHL E48), and Ancient Egyptian Foundations in Christianity (PHL E49)
