Oakton 'Women's Day' Focuses on Politics of Health
Keynote Address by Director of HIV Research at Cook County Hospital

Mardge Cohen, M.D., director of women's HIV research at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital at Cook County, is the keynote speaker for Oakton Community College's annual Women's Day Conference. This year's conference, "Women's Health: Pathways, Practices, and Politics," will be held Friday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.

Dr. Cohen will address the issue of women and AIDS in her presentation, "What You Don't Know Can Hurt You: Women, AIDS, and the Politics of Women's Health." Cohen, who founded the hospital's Women and Children's HIV Program in 1991, will focus on current HIV transmission and care information, emphasizing the effects of HIV on adolescents and young adults. She will also propose positive approaches for fighting HIV internationally.

Also featured at this year's conference is Judith Wright, author of There Must Be More Than This: Finding More Life, Love, and Meaning by Overcoming Your Soft Addictions. Utilizing concepts from a workshop she has taught for 11 years, Wright will share knowledge on conquering soft addictions such as shopping, nail biting, and television watching. Wright and her husband, Bob, are the founders of the Chicago-based Wright Institute for Lifelong Learning.

Additional Women's Day workshops include "Spirituality and Self-Defense: A Healthy Balance of the Body, Mind, and Soul," "Reproductive Rights: Who Controls the Woman's Body?," "RAWA's Malalai Hospital: An Indigenous Response to the Health Crisis for Afghan Women and Children," "The Sexual Violence Epidemic," and "Hormones Across the Continuum: What's a Woman to do About Contraception, Hormone Replacement, and Aging?"

Musical entertainment for Women' Day is by Road Scholar vocalist Cat Catalani, who will highlight the work of American women songwriters from the 19th and 20th centuries.

To complement this year's Women's Day conference, a unique art exhibit spotlighting women artists from the Chicago area will be on display at the William A. Koehnline Gallery, Nov. 10 through Nov. 14. Also, the Clothesline Project, an international tribute dedicated to women affected by violence, will be displayed in the Oakton cafeteria for two weeks.

The cost of Women's Day is $40, including lunch. Admission is free to Oakton students, faculty, and staff, however there is a $10 fee for student lunches and a $15 fee for faculty and staff lunches. For more information or to register, call Nancy Satala at 847-635-1745.
