Mardge Cohen, M.D., director of women's HIV research at John H. Stroger,
Jr. Hospital at Cook County, is the keynote speaker for Oakton Community
College's annual Women's Day Conference. This year's conference, "Women's
Health: Pathways, Practices, and Politics," will be held Friday, Nov.
14, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
Dr. Cohen
will address the issue of women and AIDS in her presentation, "What
You Don't Know Can Hurt You: Women, AIDS, and the Politics of Women's
Health." Cohen, who founded the hospital's Women and Children's HIV
Program in 1991, will focus on current HIV transmission and care information,
emphasizing the effects of HIV on adolescents and young adults. She
will also propose positive approaches for fighting HIV internationally.
Also
featured at this year's conference is Judith Wright, author of There
Must Be More Than This: Finding More Life, Love, and Meaning by Overcoming
Your Soft Addictions. Utilizing concepts from a workshop she has
taught for 11 years, Wright will share knowledge on conquering soft
addictions such as shopping, nail biting, and television watching.
Wright and her husband, Bob, are the founders of the Chicago-based
Wright Institute for Lifelong Learning.

Women's Day workshops include "Spirituality and Self-Defense: A Healthy
Balance of the Body, Mind, and Soul," "Reproductive Rights: Who Controls
the Woman's Body?," "RAWA's Malalai Hospital: An Indigenous Response
to the Health Crisis for Afghan Women and Children," "The Sexual Violence
Epidemic," and "Hormones Across the Continuum: What's a Woman to do
About Contraception, Hormone Replacement, and Aging?"
Musical
entertainment for Women' Day is by Road Scholar vocalist Cat Catalani,
who will highlight the work of American women songwriters from the
19th and 20th centuries.
To complement
this year's Women's Day conference, a unique art exhibit spotlighting
women artists from the Chicago area will be on display at the William
A. Koehnline Gallery, Nov. 10 through Nov. 14. Also, the Clothesline
Project, an international tribute dedicated to women affected by violence,
will be displayed in the Oakton cafeteria for two weeks.
The cost
of Women's Day is $40, including lunch. Admission is free to Oakton
students, faculty, and staff, however there is a $10 fee for student
lunches and a $15 fee for faculty and staff lunches. For more information
