Oakton
Community College students are the recipients of $25,000 in scholarships
from the Ernest C. Wentcher Educational Foundation for the
2004-05 academic year, according to the Oakton's Community College
Educational Foundation.
All recipients
are freshmen and include: Amy Cowin of Northbrook (liberal
arts), Christine Eberhardt of Niles (secondary education),
Katherine Lawrence of Glenview (undecided), Brian Neiberg
of Northbrook (liberal arts), Malgorzata Pakulska of Des Plaines
(liberal arts), Benjamin Satkiewicz of Evanston (liberal arts),
Amy Skaff of Skokie (undecided), Crystal Smuk of Des
Plaines (physical therapy assistant), Michelle Stryjak of Des
Plaines (business), and Marcelina Tokarczyk of Morton Grove
(business).
Established
two years ago, the Wentcher Educational Foundation focuses on quality
education as a top priority to sustain the nation's leadership in
the global economy. Last year, the Wentcher Educational Foundation
provided more than $1 million to support scholarships for Chicago
Public School students.
"We
believe it is important to ensure that deserving students, especially
those who are the first in their family to attend college, receive
the support they need to graduate and pursue meaningful careers,"
said Ernest C. Wentcher, president of the foundation. The philanthropist
also has helped raise $1 million for Children's Memorial Hospital
of Chicago.
Members
of the Wentcher Educational Foundation board include Vincent Agnew
(ret.), senior investment officer, Chicago Title and Trust Co; Stuart
Duhl, partner, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP; Brian Fitzpatrick of
Glenview, principal, Deloitte & Touche; Richard Helmholz, University
of Chicago law professor; and Jean Hoff, Wilmette, foundation vice
president.
Eligible
students must be enrolled full time in Oakton's baccalaureate/transfer
program, and show a high school G.P.A. of 3.0 or better. Applications
are considered based on educational goals, extracurricular activities,
and essay content and quality.
Oakton
Community College offers degree and certificate curricula for students
preparing to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university,
as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers.
Oakton is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member
of the North Central Association, Illinois Community College Board,
and American Association of Community Colleges.
