The Oakton
Community College Educational Foundation has received $25,000 from
the Ernest C. Wentcher Educational Foundation, to establish
a scholarship fund for eligible students. This generous gift allows
Oakton to award 10 scholarships of $2,500 each, to be used for tuition,
books, and fees in the 2004-05 academic year.
"We believe it is important to ensure that deserving students,
especially those who are the first in their family to attend college,
receive the support they need to graduate and pursue meaningful careers,"
said Ernest C. Wentcher, president of the foundation. While 20 Chicago
area students already have earned scholarships to attend various four-year
institutions around the country, Oakton is the first two-year college
to benefit from Mr. Wentcher's philanthropy.
Established
two years ago, the Wentcher Educational Foundation focuses on quality
education as a top priority to sustain the nation's leadership in
the global economy. Last year, the Wentcher Educational Foundation
provided more than $1 million to support scholarships for Chicago
Public School students. Mr. Wentcher also recently helped raise $1
million for Children's Memorial Hospital of Chicago.
Members
of the Wentcher Educational Foundation board include Vincent Agnew
(ret.), senior investment officer, Chicago Title and Trust Co; Stuart
Duhl, partner, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP; Brian Fitzpatrick
of Glenview, principal, Deloitte & Touche; Richard Helmholz, University
of Chicago law professor; and Jean Hoff, Wilmette, foundation vice
president.
Eligible
students must be enrolled full time in Oakton's baccalaureate/transfer
program, and show a high school G.P.A. of 3.0 or better. Applications
are considered based on educational goals, extracurricular activities,
and essay content and quality. Preference is given to June 2004 high
school graduates. To receive an application, call 847-635-1708. The
application deadline is 5 p.m., March 31. Students will be asked
to accept or deny their scholarship by May 3.
