Oakton
Community College is seeking volunteers to help with its ongoing woodland
restoration efforts, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, March 22, at the Des
Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. Volunteers meet in Parking Lot
D.
"We'll
be supervising people in activities such as cutting and burning buckthorn
and eliminating other harmful plants," said Ken Schaefer, Oakton naturalist
and groundskeeper, who is coordinating the restoration effort with
members of the Ecology Club and Students for Social Justice. "We'll
also demonstrate and discuss the benefits of a 'controlled burn'."
Oakton's
2008 - 2012 "Strategic Goals and Objectives" includes the aim to "continue
to transform and restore our grounds and natural habitat so they are
a model for environmental responsibility and an educational resource
for students and the community." The Des Plaines campus is located
on 174 acres adjacent to a Cook County Forest Preserve.
A
continental breakfast will be served 8:30 - 9 a.m. Physical activity
is required, and volunteers should wear warm, comfortable work clothes,
gloves, and boots. Youth workers (age 12 and up) must be accompanied
by an adult. The "rain date" is Saturday, March 29.
Space is limited and registration is required by Monday, March 17.
