| My Promises to You: Looking for Strengths in All the Right Places
Tweety Yates, University of Illinois
If someone asked you to list three promises you would make to the infants and toddlers in your care, how would you respond? Most of your promises would likely contain a social emotional component (e.g., “I promise to keep you safe . . . help you learn . . . provide opportunities to build competence and confidence,” etc.). Bring your own list to explore fun strategies for building on the strengths of every infant and toddler. |
Tweety Yates is a member of the Department of Special Education
faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and serves as a co-coordinator of the Center on the Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning. She also is involved in several other early childhood projects that focus on early literacy
initiatives and relationship-based interventions to support development through parent-child interactions. Yates is currently working with several states on building systems around the promotion of social-
emotional development and the prevention of challenging behavior. She serves on the board of the Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health and is a past president of the Division of Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children. |
