Faces Behind the Truth
Charles Szymkowicz is a Belgian pioneer of European New Figuration and Neo-Expressionism. Bright, incisive colors and vibrant brush strokes turn his works into expressive and powerful images. This special exhibition in the United States showcases a variety of portraits – Szymkowicz’s preferred genre. According to art history professor Enrico Crispolti, “What Szymkowicz offers us is not . . . a celebratory but innocuous ‘souvenir’ collection of great personalities of the recent past and the present, but rather exemplary iconic presences crafted, peremptorily proposed, and assembled in each of his shows. These serve as parameters of an adversarial antagonism whose present-day relevance is asserted as landmarks in our condition of defenseless participants in a culturally disjointed and ethically confused fluid society.”
Public Reception: Thursday, May 9, 5 - 8 p.m.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday.
