Oakton Community College is Smoke Free

(February 24, 2015) Oakton’s campuses in Des Plaines and Skokie are smoke free as of Wednesday, July 1, in accordance with the Higher Education Smoke-Free Campus Act. The College’s Wellness Committee has already established a Smoke-Free Campus Act Task Force that has implemented an information campaign and begun a smoking cessation program to help current students and employees who want to quit before the implementation date.

Smoking has long been prohibited in Oakton’s buildings and is now banned on all campus property (inside and outside), including all College-owned vehicles.

The policy applies to any individual on campus property, including but not limited to students, employees, contractors, subcontractors, volunteers, visitors, and members of the public.

  • Smoking (burning, inhaling, or exhaling) includes:
  • Cigarettes
  • Cigars
  • Electronic cigarettes
  • Pipes
  • Any additional smoking equipment, whether filled with tobacco or any other type of material

In addition to complying with State law, Oakton is committed to providing a healthy learning environment for students and a healthy work environment for its employees.
