Oakton Student Named 2015 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar

(March 19, 2015)  Oakton Community College student Zainab Khan has been named a 2015 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. The Foundation, which sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program, recognizes 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars, and provides nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society administers the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program. Khan will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a special medallion, and she will be honored at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention on April 18, in San Antonio, Texas.

An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process.

A Niles North High School alumna and a resident of Morton Grove, Khan is a liberal arts major at Oakton. She is actively involved in the College’s Student Government Association. Currently president, she has also served as senator and secretary during her time at the College. In addition, she is a member of Oakton’s Emerging Leader Program and was an intern at U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s Glenview district office.

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation President  J. Mark Davis. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa and make it possible for deserving students to achieve their educational goals.”

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1,285 chapters on two-year and community college campuses throughout the country.
