Fall Awakening Brings Students Together

(August 28, 2015) More than 250 students experienced an “awakening” of Oakton spirit during Fall Awakening, a social event held on Aug. 27 at the Des Plaines campus that included free food, music, an obstacle course, a bounce house, jousting, and even bubble soccer.

Sponsored by Oakton jOURney, a peer mentorship initiative, and the College Program Board, a student organization committed to coordinating extracurricular activities at Oakton, Fall Awakening provided an opportunity for students to get to know each other outside of the classroom.

“This is a great way for students to get together outside while bonding and letting out some energy,” said Will Dixon while enjoying some pizza on a warm, sunny afternoon. “This builds a positive environment around the campus.”

“I’m glad I came because it demonstrates that there is so much more to Oakton than just attending class and leaving,” said Alex Landowski, after participating in a game of bubble soccer.

Organizers were happy with the turn out. “I think we succeeded in what we wanted to do – have students transition into the new semester in a fun way,” said Aaron Victor, peer mentor.

“Who doesn’t love free food and activities,” said Mia Tomasello, peer mentor, while watching students come out to the event. “What an opportunity for students to network with each other and get out of their comfort zone while doing fun activities. Our goal was to have participants meet at least one new person he or she didn’t know before.”
