Oakton to Feature Bionic Devices Oct. 6 at IEEE Day

(October 1, 2015) Science fiction is fast becoming science fact! Learn about new bionic devices that hold the promise to dramatically improve the quality of life for persons who have lost limbs. This event at Oakton Community College, 7701 North Lincoln Avenue, Skokie (Room P103), on Tuesday, Oct. 6, highlights IEEE Day presented by the Northwest Subsection (NWSS) (part of the Chicago Section) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The program begins at 5:30 p.m. with a special presentation for students on the importance of professional societies to both academic and professional careers. IEEE members will be available to answer questions. Students are encouraged to remain for the technical presentation.

The NWSS technical meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and giveaways.

At 7 p.m., the Center for Bionic Medicine of the Rehabilitation Institute of Technology will present its work with the next generation of intelligent prosthetics and muscle re-enervation.  Until recently, artificial limbs utilized a design dating back to the Civil War. The Center has made amazing breakthroughs in mapping control points and harnessing the power of the brain to control a new generation of prosthetic devices that could dramatically improve the quality of life for persons who have missing due to disease, birth defects, and trauma.

The event is free, but attendees are asked to register online in advance at http://bit.ly/1KRUpQ8. IEEE members are asked to register in Vtools™.
