Oakton joins global campaign to prevent violence against women

(Feb. 4, 2016) Join Oakton Community College students and employees as they unite together with millions from around the world on Thursday Feb. 11, to demand an end to brutality against women by rising and dancing. Open to the public, a “flash mob” dance will begin at 12 p.m., at the main lobby of the college’s campuses in Des Plaines (1600 E. Golf Road) and Skokie (7701 N. Lincoln Avenue).

The free event is part of One Billion Rising, a day of action coordinated by V-Day, a global activist movement that generates attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest and sex slavery. Approximately 6,000 V-Day events are held annually across the globe.

V-Day continues at Oakton with three benefit performances of “The Vagina Monologues”, Feb. 12 -14, at the Studio One Theater on the Des Plaines campus. Sponsored by Women’s and Gender Studies and the Performing Arts Department, these staged readings of Eve Ensler’s powerful masterpiece delve into the deepest secrets and fantasies of women around the world. Proceeds from “The Vagina Monologues” will raise funds and awareness about the brutality against females.

Show times are 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 2 p.m., Sunday Feb. 14. Ticket prices for “The Vagina Monologues” are $12 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors. To order tickets, visit www.oakton.edu/tickets or call 847.635.1900.
