Oakton recognized as Military Friendly School

(Nov. 10, 2016) Oakton Community College has been named to Victory Media’s coveted Military Friendly Schools® list.

The 2017 Military Friendly Schools® list honors the colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

“Inclusion on the 2017 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows Oakton’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Oakton President Joianne Smith. “Approximately 225 veteran and military students attend Oakton each year, accounting for about 2 percent of our students.”

The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions.

“Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans,” said Navy Reserve veteran and Victory Media Chief Product Officer Daniel Nichols. “Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”

Military Friendly Schools® media and website feature the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. Colleges, universities and trade schools on the annual list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

The survey tabulation process, methodology and weightings that comprise the 2017 list were independently verified by Ernst and Young LLP. Each year, schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from schools across the country.

“It is a distinction and honor for Oakton to be recognized as a Military Friendly School®,” said Academic Advisor Brooke Roche. “We are continually trying to make Oakton a more supportive and welcoming environment for our military and veteran students.”

A full story and detailed list of 2017 Military Friendly Schools® will be highlighted in the annual G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools® distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel, special education issues of G.I.
