Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Honors Oakton Soccer Teams
The Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference bestowed numerous honors on both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The Illinois Skyway named Steve Brody as The 2009 Coach of the Year.
Men's Soccer
The Illinois Skyway recognized freshman goalkeeper John Michael Kulnig (Maine South) as The 2009 Player of the Year. Under Brody, the Raiders captured the conference crown and were undefeated (5-0-2) in league play. In net, Kulnig posted six conference shutouts. Kulnig also was named to the Illinois Skyway All-Conference First Team, along with sophomore forward Kamil Szczepanski (Niles West), freshman midfielder/forward Ionut Ciocan (Niles West), midfielder Alex Nagatkin (Niles North), sophomore midfielder Biruk Lemma (Lake View), and sophomore defender Danny Montesinos (Maine West). Honorable Mention nods went to freshman midfielder Alexios Fronimos (Meligala, Greece), sophomore defender Karol Ruszel (Maine West), sophomore defender/midfielder Thomas Hailu (Sullivan), sophomore defender Victor Fuentes (Bonnabel), and sophomore defenseman Pablo Perdomo (Ridgewood).
Oakton’s season ended at the hands of the College of DuPage on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Raiders dropped a 1-0 decision in the in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region IV Tournament.
Women's Soccer
Nine Oakton women’s soccer players were named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference All-Conference Team. Freshman forward Elizabeth Salgado (Cristo Rey Jesuit), freshman midfielder Sandy Ibarra-Alvarez (Maine West), freshman midfielder Lisandra Herrera (Clemente), and sophomore defender Karina Avila (Maine East) were first team selections. Freshman midfielder Lisette Salgado (Latino Youth), sophomore midfielder Samantha Garza (Maine South), freshman goalkeeper Jovana Govederica (Maine South), freshman defender Stephanie Moreno (Niles North), and freshman defender Dylan Peters (Regina Dominican) were selected to the honorable mention team.
The season came to a close for the women’s soccer team on Tuesday, Oct. 27, as they lost a 2-1 decision to Elgin in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region IV Tournament.
