Being a college student can be very stressful. Individual counseling gives students the opportunity to examine their lives and environment, so that they can make the most of their time at Oakton. Counseling at crucial times in a student's life can make a significant difference in one's academic success and quality of life. Common problems and concerns students bring to counseling include:

Grief and loss
Relationship issues
Loneliness
Thoughts of suicide
Gender issues
Concerns about sex and sexuality
Family problems
Trauma or abuse
Disordered eating
Concerns about alcohol or drug use
Divorce
Learning to live in a new culture
Self Esteem

In addition to providing brief counseling for students enrolled in 3 or more credit hours, counselors provide crisis intervention, consultation with faculty and staff, and when appropriate, referral to community agencies.

To make an appointment with a counselor, call or stop by the Advising and Counseling Center and request an appointment. If you need to speak with a counselor right away please ask to speak to a staff member in the Center.
