Changing Worlds
Trace the lives of 10 families whose stories of change, loss, and cultural identity take the viewer on an exploration of new beginnings, courageous triumphs, and future dreams. This exhibition gives voice to those who are too often seen and heard through the filters of stereotypes and prejudices. Derived from a permanent exhibit at Hibbard School in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood, these intergenerational stories represent families from Cambodia, Iraq, Mexico, Somalia, Pakistan, Poland, Nicaragua, Palestine, Bosnia, and Puerto Rico. Human Race Machine
“The more we recognize ourselves in others, the more we can connect to the human race,” says artist Nancy Burson, co-creator of the Human Race Machine. The Human Race Machine uses morphing technology to allow people to see their own face with the characteristics of six different races— Asian, Caucasian, African, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Indian. Three other programs are available: the Age Machine, which for many years has been used by the FBI in kidnapping and missing child cases; the Couples Machine, which combines photographs of two people to show how their offspring might look; and the Anomaly Machine, which lets viewers see themselves with various facial abnormalities caused by trauma or birth defect. Modern Language Department Poster Contest
Celebrate Cultures Week through art and creativity! Students have designed a variety of posters that promote the 11 modern languages taught at Oakton, with prizes going to the winning artists.
