TUESDAY

Haiti’s Past, Present, and Future
9:30 - 10:45 a.m.

Join Students for Social Justice for a presentation on the modern history and culture of Haiti. Learn what is being done to try and help this beautiful but troubled island nation, whose population suffers from poverty, illiteracy, and political corruption. [Room 1604]

The Yacoubian Building (Arabic) – Modern Language Film Festival [Room 1608]
11 a.m - 12:45 p.m.

Bubbleology
12 - 1 p.m.

Geoffrey “Merlin” Akins is an international bubble artist who creates moments of wonder and awe in “Bubbleology.” In this captivating and hilarious performance, Akins uses ordinary soap bubbles to create huge dancing bubbles; smoke-filled volcano bubbles; the impossible square bubble (as well as other shapes including caterpillars, ice cream cones, and snowmen); and even a functioning Bubble Merry-Go-Round. [Cafeteria]

Miniature Marvels of the World
12 - 1 p.m.

Tour major monuments and buildings from around the world, all replicated as small-scale models. Oakton students in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) will be on hand to
discuss their miniature marvels. [Room 1606]

Geography of Bliss
1 - 2 p.m.

What makes people happy? What cultures claim to be happiest – and why? Join a panel of Oakton students born and raised abroad as they listen to a recorded lecture by author Eric Weiner, and discuss the search for happiness. [Room 1604]

“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”: The Power of African American Folk Music
2 - 2:30 p.m.

Join Judy Langston, professor of art and graphic design, for a fascinating look at the hidden meanings behind African American folk songs. These songs not only provided spiritual and emotional support for slaves toiling in the fields, but also carried on the rich African heritage thought to be lost during the Middle Passage. [Room 1608]

The Mission of UNICEF: Child Labor in the Philippines
2:30 - 3:15 p.m.

The UNICEF Club welcomes guest presenter Michael Madill, professor of government and history, to discuss the problems – and possible solutions – surrounding child labor in the Philippines. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is dedicated to the education of children’s issues through the advocacy of letter-writing campaigns to government officials, and fundraising for emergency relief, education, immunization, child protection and nutrition. Coffee, tea, and favorite pastries will be served to celebrate Philippine culture. [Room 1606]

Seville, Spain
5:30 - 6 p.m.

Home to bullfighting and flamenco dance, the Andalusia region of southern Spain has become a destination of Oakton students through our exchange program with Seville. The Legacy of Holocaust Films

[Room 1608]
