Secondary/Scrub Woods (extends 20-40 ft. into the woods, or up to mature Oaks and Maples)

Preexisting conditions:
Young second growth forest trying to figure itself out. A lot of Buckthorn, Box Elder, Sugar Maples, Basswood, Hawthorn, and a few Mustard Bud Hickory. Very degraded. Trees covered with grapes. A lot of Garlic Mustard.
This area was farmed with livestock in the woods. Remains of human impact are still visible.
Work done:
Trees:
Cut Buckthorn. Thin Sugar Maples, Elm, Basswood, Box Elder – Minimal.
(2003-04) cut and pull dense young Buckthorns, thin Sugar Maples.
Shrubs:
Gooseberry very small, barely hanging on.
(2003-04) Largest concentrations of Gooseberries on campus. Many have been given more light. Should get much better.
Vines:
Cut a lot of grapevines
Plants:
None planted.
Seeds:
First seeding in winter of 2003, after a burn. Southern section only, up to 2nd entrance to lot A. Woodland grasses and forbes.
Weeds:
Canada Thistle + Garlic Mustard, very dense.
Reed Canary Grass, Creeping Charlie, Nightshade.
(2003-04) Coming under control in southern area only.
Burn:
(Winter 2003) Southern section almost up to 2nd driveway in lot A, into the woods to the large oaks.
Other:

Positive:
Its a start!
A few Gooseberries coming back
2 Mustard Bud Hickory
Negative:
A very degraded area. Opening up the canopy and wood edge has unleashed Thistles, Garlic Mustard and Buckthorn.
