Area 13:

Drainage Stream and Slopes (College Drive Bridge to River)

 Work Started

1998

Preexisting conditions (as observed in 1998):

Portion along Circle Drive was mowed and was deeply eroding.

Slope (Adjacent to Area 14) thick Buckthorn.

Stream through woods and into river devoid of vegetation

Seed and plant bank present along Circle Drive with the following:  Ironweed, Side Flowering Aster, Obedient Plant,

Germander,Dogbane, and Sedges.

Trees:

(1998)  Cut Buckthorn

(1998)  Thin Green Ash, Box Elder, Multi-trunked Basswood

(2003-2004)  Young Buckthorn cut and pulled on wooded slope.

Shrubs:

(1998)  Thin Willow (unknown species)                        

Vines:

(2002)  Many Cat's Briars present.   Largest ones needed supports made from harvested Sugar Maples

Plants:

(1998)  Planted along Stream Edge – Obedient Plant, Cup Plant, Rudbekia, Laciniata, Sneezeweed

(1998)  Planted along Slope – Greenhouse grown grasses,Virginia Rye, Silky Rye,Woodland Brome, Wood Reed 

(1998)   Planted along Stream mouth – Obedient Plant

(2003)   Thin tall Goldenrod.

Seeds:  

(1998)  Forbs throughout

(2003-2004)  Winter, slope seeded with grasses and forbs.

 Weeds:

(1998)  Reed Canary Grass, Curly Dock, Morning Glory, Motherwort, Canada Thistle, Annual grasses

(2003-2004) Morning Glory and Canada thistle still a problem in this area.

Burn:  

(2000-2001)  Circle Drive Slope and low area

(Winter 2003)  From bridge to north edge (Adjacent to area 12), but not to the river.

Other:

(1998)  Terrace Slope areas with harvested Sugar Maple

(1998)  Pool and Riffle technique with Cottonwood and Maple logs to stop deep cutting erosion.  Has been very successful, but needs to be repaired/replaced

(1998) Some trees were chicken wired to keep the beavers away.

(2003-2004)  Pool and riffle is being replaced by found concrete blocks.

RESULTS (AREA 13) Beginning in August of 2001

Positive

Erosion greatly slowed.

Seed bank and plants thriving along Circle Drive.  Able to collect seed - Water Dock, Germander, Cup Plant, Obedient Plant, Side Flowering Aster

Seed bank responding - Rice Cut Grass, Cut leaf Water Horehound, Sedges, Swamp Milkweed, and Dogbane

Negative:

Stream leading into the river is not responding to more light due to continual river inundation.  May not be possible to vegetate lowest areas.

Comments:

The ditch has some very nice plant colonies and diversity.
