NATIVE AREAS DATA BY NUMBERED SECTIONS

Area 15:

Reconstructed Riverbank

Work Started:

1998

Preexisting conditions:

Riverbank in woods eroding 2-3 ft. per year.  Mature Oaks falling into river.  Dump slope relatively stable covered with non-natives.

Work done:

 Trees:

(1998) Contractors – clear all trees to make road through the woods for heavy equipment.

(2003-04) A few young Oaks (3-4) coming in. They were caged.

Shrubs:

(1998) Serviceberry eradicated by machinery.

(1998) Willows added along water edge by contractors – all drowned

(2004) If possible, new Willows may be added from cuttings from Buffalo Grove Prairie.

Vines:

(1998) None

Plants:

(2001) Sneezeweed added along eroding bank 25 plants

(2001) Cumberland Prairie

Seeds:

(1998) By contractors – not locally genetic.  Seems to be bad mix with Vetch, St. Johns Wort added.  Fair overall coverage.

(2002-04)  Some locally genetic Grasses and Forbs scattered.

Weeds:

(1998) Terrible outbreak of Canada Thistle, Vetch, Reed Canary Grass, Bull Thistle, Dame's Rocket.

(2002-04) All of the above will continue to be a problem. They are being pulled and herbicide was applied.

 Burn:

(2003-04) No burning because erosion netting is still working in many areas. Don't want to burn the netting.

 Other:

(1998) Many semis of Fill added and graded.

(1998) Baby Oak trees protected with cages

(1998) Slide show of contractors work available

(2003-04) Bank has areas of erosion concerns that should be addressed.

RESULTS (Area 15) Beginning in August 2001

Positive

Erosion somewhat slowed - Some plants taking hold

(2003-04) At least 75% of bank may be stabilized.

Negative

(1998, 2003-04) Woodland area collapsed, although a shelf has formed into the river to partially stabilize the still eroding slope.

(1998, 2003-04) Bad weed outbreaks
