Area 4:

Ring Woods – East Side

Work Started:

Winter 1999

Preexisting conditions:

Thick Buckthorns throughout.  Small wetland remnant southeast edge with Sedges, Blue Flag Iris  

Work done:

Trees:

(1999) Cut Buckthorn, few Silver Maples

(2003-04) Mow baby Buckthorn (mature Buckthorns gone from the area.) 

Shrubs:

(1999) Small colony of Nannyberries – pruned, very weak – North Edge

(2002-2004) A few spindly prickly ash have emerged with Nannyberries. They are still weak and not reproducing.

(2003) 2 Elderberries planted in south east corner.

Vines:

(1999)  Yellow Honeysuckle – small, very weak.  

(1999)  Baby Buckthorns pulled around them.  15-20 total

(2002-2004) Honeysuckle still very weak. Open to deer predation.

Plants:   

(1999)  Planted – Wetland plants southern corner: Obedient Plant, Cup Plant, Rudbekia Laciniata, Sneezeweed,Swamp Agrimonies

(1999)  Planted – Prairie plants on southwest edge – N.E, Aster, and Rosinweed

(2002) Swamp Agromonia, Heath Aster and 2 Elderberries planted in south east corner. 

Seeds:      

(1999)Wetland mixture

(1999) Woods lightly seeded throughout with grasses, some more conservative forbs.

(2002 - 2003)  Lightly seeded with grasses and forbs throughout.

Weeds:   

(1999) Garlic Mustard, Reed Canary Grass, and Curly Dock

(2002-2004)  Above plants mostly under control – Explosion of Bull Thistle has come in.

Burn:

(2001) Wetland where possible – poor fuel

(2001) Woods – sporadic in North and East.  Good leaf fuel

(2002) Sporadic throughout.

(2003) Winter – East border and north east corner burned well.

Other:

(1999)  Recycled all of the Buckthorns on site through fencing or chipping around borders.

(1999) Drainage ditch dug about 15 years ago.  Probably a mistake.  Has since been partially filled in with logs.

(1999) Pick up downed logs and pile for easier burning and to create wildlife habitat

(2002-2003) Identified and caged one year old oaks along south and east edges.

All mature Buckthorn removed

(2002) Wet areas responding – upland areas slow

(2003-2004) Wet areas better.

Buckthorn seed bank emerging

Poor native seed bank in the woods

Comments:    

East and southern areas should start re-vegetating from seeds if a good burn occurs.
