Lot C Area

Work Started:

1995

Preexisting conditions:

Thick Buckthorn, Many Young Elm, Silver Maple, Green Ash, Black Ash - some Seed Bank - Sedges, Water Hemlock - Red - White Trillium, Blue Spring Ephemerals.

Work done:

Trees:

(1995)  Buckthorn were cut. Thin 1”- 6” native trees: Elm, Silver maple, Green Ash, Black Ash.

(2003- 2004)  Baby Buckthorn were mowed.

Shrubs:

(1995)  Minimal – a few Nannyberries and Prickly Ash.

(2003-2004)    A few small Gooseberries were found.

(2003-2004)    Prickly Ash is spreading.

Vines:

(1995)  Minimal – some Virginia Creeper.

(1995)  Cut poison ivy vines growing up trees, 15 + Yellow Honeysuckle, West Wood Edge

(1995)  Sprayed with hot sauce – no blooms.

(2002) As a test Honeysuckle was not sprayed against deer. The deer ate them, so they will be protected in 2003.

Plants:

(1995)  Plant nursery – Yellow Hyssops, Coffee, Cow Parsnip, Woodland Sunflower, Virginia Bluebells, Columbine, and Joe Pye

(1995)  Planted in Deer enclosure: Coffee, Sol Seal, False Feathery Sob, Seal, Bloodroot Rueanenome, Columbine, Virginia, Bluebell, Geranium, Starry Champion, Ginger

(2002-2003)  Tall goldenrod was pulled along wood edges.

Seeds:

(1995) Lightly seeded east & west areas with grasses & sedges.

Waiting for seed bank to respond.

(2002) Seed Bank response was spotty. The spot was seeded with grass and forbs.

(2003) Seeded grasses and forbs form colonies.

Weeds:

(1995)  Light Garlic Mustard, Canada Thistle

Burn:

(1999-2001)  Spot burn west area (very wet, light fuel)               

(1999-2001)  Gardens and  exclosures burned very well in

(1999-2001)  South area – spotty

(2002) The area south of parking lot C was spot burned.

(Winter 2003) The area, south of parking lot C to Forest Preserve District border was burned well. The north and west area were spot burned.

Other:

(1985)  Drainage stream dug   Probably a mistake.  Now partially filled with logs and branches.
(1995)  Build deer exclosure consisting of White Trilliums:

(1995)  Prenanthes alba seed bank doing well.             

(1996)  Garden by Grounds building – fence from deer

(2002)  Deer got into the exclosure and destroyed most plants.

(2002)  Wildlife habitats out of logs were built.

(2002- 2003) The Buckthorn was cut as a part of Eagle Scout project.

RESULTS/AREA 5 Beginning in August 2001

 

Positive:

(2001) Seed bank responding – grasses + sedges, Yellow Honeysuckle, White Trillium, Jack in Pulpit, Woodland Anemone, Green dragon, Starry Sol-Seal, Tall Meadow Rue, Hemlock, Oxipilus rigidor, Golden Alexander, Elm Leafed Goldenrod, Michigan Lily, Monkey Flower, Woodland Phlox, Turtlehead, Sensitive Fern.

(2003 – 2004)  About a dozen running strawberries were found.

(2003- 2004)   Swamp White Oak area sedges were found to be slowly spreading.

Negative

(2001)  Baby Buckthorn still big problem along edges.

(2001)   Young native trees shade starting to set back areas again.

(2001)  Deer a constant problem.

(2003 – 2004) More plants must be caged from the deer (Yellow Honey Suckle and Running Strawberry).

(2003- 2004)   No baby Oaks were found yet.
