Preexisting conditions:
Thick Buckthorn along Circle Drive. Dense maple growth along College Drive with some native plants evident. A lot of Garlic Mustard.
Work done:
Trees:
(1996) Cut Buckthorn, thin Sugar Maples, trim up trees all along College Drive. Outside contractor cut mature trees that were interfering with road lights.
(2003-04) 8 baby Oaks and Hickories were found and caged.
Shrubs:
(1996) Few Gooseberries observed. Servviceberries pruned Southeast border of College Drive & sprayed for deer (hot sauce).
(1996) Removed Barberries.
(2003-04) Gooseberries caged.
(2003-04) A few Prickly Ash and Nannyberry along Circle Drive coming in.
Vines:
(1996) Cut Poison Ivy on trees, some grape vines
(2002-04) Some Cat's Brier and Yellow Honeysuckle were emerging. Cat's Brier will need to have support system.
Plants:
(2001-04) Tall Goldenrod was pulled.
Seeds:
(1996) Along Circle Drive lightly done in colonies; grasses or forbs
(1996) Along College Drive lightly with grass & forb mixture
Weeds:
(1996) Garlic Mustard, Canada & Bull Thistle, Reed Canary Grass, Crab & Barnyard Grass, Knotweed, Creeping Charlie
(2003-04) All of the above weeds are waning, except a persistent patch of Creeping Charlie and Canada Thistle along College Drive.
Burn:
(Spring 2003) Most of the edge along College Drive was burned.
Other:
(1996) Build Buckthorn fence along Circle Drive
(1996) Spray deer repellent.
RESULTS/Area 7 Beginning in August 2001
Positive:
Some nice plant colonies emerging along College Drive
Elmleafed Goldenrod, Serviceberry, Sedges, Gooseberry, Woodland Knotweed, Joe Pye, White Snakeroot, Leeks, Red Trillium, a few ferns, Aster Laterifolus, Dolls Eye
Woodland wet area emerged with Blue Vervain, Menthe Aruensis Woodreed, White Vervain, Sedges (Southeast College Drive)
Garlic Mustard almost under control
(2002-04) The seeding and seedbank is showing results.
Negative:
Salt damage to trees along College Drive a problem. Many mature Oaks have died. Poor seed bank along Circle Drive.
(2003-04) Sugar Maple shading is becoming more of a problem in areas along College Drive.
