Preexisting conditions:

Scrubwoods regeneration (30-50 years?)

Area heavy in Buckthorn, and Grapes.  Some existing vegetation, mostly in wet areas and wooded edges.

Work done   

Trees:

(1997) Cut Buckthorn.

(1997) Thinned Sugar Maples and Green Ash Trees. 

Shrubs:

(1997) Few Gooseberries (2 varieties)- Sprayed area with deer repellent.

(2003-2004) Caged some of the Gooseberries.

Vines:

(1997) Catsbrier – Built tripod support system.

(1997) Cut grapes, and Poison Ivy.

Plants:  

(1997) Planted in wet areas – Joe Pye, Common Boneset, Sneezeweed, Obedient Plant, Ironweed, Cord Grass, and Cup Plant.

(1997) Planted in upland (greenhouse grown)– Woodland Brome, Virginia Rye, Bottlebrush Grass, and Culvers Root.

(2003-2004) Pulled tall grass and Leaved Golden Rod.

Seeds:  

(1997) Upland planted– Nodding Wild Onion, Biennial Gaura, White Vervan, Woodland Grasses, Yellow Hyssops, and Penstamon Digitalis.

(1997) Wetland planted– Sneezeweed (obedient type of plant).

Weeds:  

(1997) Garlic Mustard, Canada Thistle, Morning Glory, Curly Dock, Nightshade.

(2003) Fall- Spotty in upland.

(2002-2004) All are still present, but declining.

Burn:  

(1997) Upland- Little ground fuel.

(1997) Wetland- Area looks good.

(1999-2001)- Spotty.

(2003) Upland (Fall)- Spotty.

Other:

(1997) Built Buckthorn fence.

(1997) Controled Cattail invasion.

RESULTS/AREA 8 Beginning in August 2001

 Positive

Wetland Area– Thriving– Great plant and seed bank recovery.

Rice cut grass, Hemlock, Water Dock, Menthe Aruensis, Swamp Milkweed, Sedges,

Blue flag Iris.

Upland – Seed bank and plant recovery spotty.

Tall Meadow Rue, Gooseberry, White Venvain, Sedges, Spotted St. Johns Wort, Couple Ferns, Common Milkweed, Germander

Negative:

Buckthorn seed bank exploding.

Poison Ivy increasing.

Comments:

These are young woods, and are still being established as to what they are. Found one nice young red oak and black walnut present in area.
