Students with disabilities who identify themselves
to the ASSIST staff are provided
classroom accommodations appropriate for their specific disability.
These accommodations are made based on the medical/psychological
documentation students are required to submit and the interview
students have with the ASSIST
staff. |
Students may be reluctant to inform their instructors of their disability.
Many students choose to attempt college without any support, and their
decision should be respected. However, instructors have the responsibility
to include the following statement on their syllabi:
| If you have a documented learning, psychological, or physical
disability, you may be entitled to reasonable academic accommodations
or services. To request accommodations or services, contact the
ASSIST office in the Learning
Center. All students are expected to fulfill essential course requirements.
The College will not waive any essential skill or requirement of
a course or a degree program. |
| Students who have identified themselves with the ASSIST
office and qualify for accommodation(s) will present an ASSIST
Accommodation Form to the instructor. Only those accommodations
identified on the form should be provided for the student, i.e.
extended test time, note takers. |
 |
Presentation of an accommodation form is not to be interpreted as permission
for the student to expect lowered course requirements. All students,
regardless of their disability, are expected to meet the same standards
and complete all required coursework. Appropriate behavior is also expected,
and students should not be excused for inappropriate or offensive behavior
simply because they have provided an instructor with an accommodation
form.
All faculty are encouraged to contact the ASSIST
office (ext.1759) with questions or concerns about disability issues.
