Qualified students may choose to take the MAT 102 Proficiency Test instead of taking the course MAT 102, Mathematics for Allied Health, required for nursing applicants.

Candidates must be proficient in calculating medication doses using metric measures and must score 90% on the test in order to pass. Students who do not pass the test must take the MAT 102 course( 2 credit hours).

The prerequisite for the course or the test is placement in MAT 120, Intermediate Algebra, on Oakton's math placement test or successful completion of MAT 051, Algebraic Foundations, or MAT 052, Elementary Algebra.

The test is administered on a computer at Des Plaines Campus only.The fee for the test is $20.

  • There are 26 questions.
  • The time limit is two hours.
  • A simple calculator is allowed, provided by the TESTING CENTER.

TO PREPARE FOR THE TEST:

  1. Study the MAT 102 textbook, Math for Meds by Curran and Munday, on reserve in Oakton's library at both campuses.
  2. Practice using the MAT 102 sample test.
  3. MAT 102 Study Guides are available at the Learning Center (DP) reception desk.

TO REGISTER FOR THE TEST:

Call the Testing Center, Room 2409 Des Plaines, at (847) 635-1939 to make an apppointment to take the test.

At the time of the test, you must show a photo I.D., receive a voucher from the TESTING CENTER and then pay the $20 test fee to the Cashier's office.
