Oakton Dialup - Changing your Phone Number in the Connection Settings

As of January, 2002 *, all phone calls placed from one 847 area code phone number to another will require 11-digit dialing. This includes dialing into the College for Internet access. Oakton Dialup users in the 847 area code will need to update their connection settings by following the steps below. (Users outside the 847 area code should not need to change anything.)

The following steps should work well for those who used the Oakton Dialup CD to set up their connections on Windows 95/98/ME systems.

On your home computer's desktop, click on the "Dial <username's> Oakton Community College Account" icon.

The Connect To dialogue window should appear. The phone number field will contain the number and possibly the area code just as your modem has been dialing so far.

If the Phone number field contains "1 847 7952270" (spaces optional), you don't need to change anything and you may connect or exit as desired.

If the Phone number field contains only "7952270," click the Dial Properties button.

Notes

  1. If you edit the number here on the Connect To screen, the change will not be permanent.
  2. What your Connect To  screen displays in the Dialing from  field may not match the illustration.

The Dialing Properties window will appear.

Find the Area Code field. This field should contain the area code from which you have been dialing (i.e., your HOME area code). If it is no longer correct, click the number to select it and type in the correct area code.

At the bottom left of the window check the box for Dial as a long distance call. The number displayed just above it should change to 11 digits after you check the box.

If your phone service (call waiting, etc.) has not changed, you should not have to alter any other information.

Click OK.

This will return you to the previous window where the number in the Phone Number field should now be updated.

You may now either click on the Connect button to dial into the college or click the Cancel button and close the window without connecting. (Clicking on Cancel will NOT cancel your changes.)

* 11-digit dialing is optional prior to January, 2002. It is OK to make changes to your dialup settings before 11-digit dialing is mandatory. Note that this is due to the rollout of a new area code overlay, not changes made by Oakton. If you also have a non-Oakton dialup ISP, such as Netzero, follow their instructions for any settings updates.
