Netscape Messenger
Overview of Folders

(The following instructions relate to Messenger in 3-Panel View. The information remains essentially the same but the illustrations differ.
Click here for 2-Panel View version.)

Messenger stores email messages in folders-- much like the way your other computer files are stored in directories.

When you start up Messenger, it will generally open to your Inbox folder (where your new mail is placed). Initially you probably won't need to deal with any of the others. Soon thereafter the value of working with the other folders should become apparent.

Messenger 4.51 when in "3-panel view" shows your available folders in a column running down the left of the window.

In addition to the default folders (listed and defined below), the illustration to the right shows that additional personal folders can be created. These additional folders can be used to manage and file messages. You can manually move messages into any of your folders or set up "filters" to place new messages directly into them.

The default folders are divided into two areas: those on the mail server (borg.oakton.edu) and those under "Local Mail." Generally speaking, your active default folders will be the ones under borg. Some important things to note about the differences between borg and Local mail are:

  1. Borg and Local mail store messages on different servers. Thus the server space each uses do not count against each other.
  2. If you check your mail from off-campus, you will only be able to access the folders under Borg.

Follows is a list of the default folders a typical user should have under the borg mail server and what they are for:

  • Inbox: where Messenger stores new mail
  • Unsent Messages: contains messages you've deferred for later delivery or messages sent while working offline.
  • Drafts: contains messages that you want to finish later before sending
  • Sent: contains copies of messages you've sent (Note: Your configuration may actually move your "sent" mail to the Sent folder under Local mail)
  • Trash: contains messages you've deleted

To view the contents of each folder:

  1. Click on the name of the folder you wish to view
  2. The messages in that folder should now be showing in the Header area
To return to "Inbox:"
  1. Click on Inbox
To Expand a folder and view sub-folders
  1. Click on the Plus sign next to the folder name
