Netscape Messenger allows you to insert images (.jpg or .gif formats only)
into the body of an email message. The image can be one you have stored on a
local file or found on the world wide web. You can embed the image in the email,
which means that the actual image will be mailed along with the message. Alternatively,
if the image is available on the Web (including any you have saved to your H:
public.www folder) you can link to the image. When the recipient opens the message
Netscape will pull the image from the web and then insert it.
Linking to an image rather than embedding it will make the file size of your
message smaller. The recipient can still save any images you link to
the same way in which you save an image from a web page (right-click on it and
choose Save As).
- With Netscape Messenger running, click on New Message. This will pop
up a standard message composition window.
- On the message composition window, go to the Insert
menu and select Image
|
 |
- The Image Properties dialog window will open. Click Choose
File.
|
 |
- A file dialog window (fig. 1) will appear. Locate the desired image
file and click once on the name to select it.
- Note: You can select an image file from any drive or folder if you
intend to embed it and send it along with the message. Only your files
under your public.www folder and its sub-folders are linkable.
- Click on Open. You
will be returned to the Image Properties dialog window.
|
 |
- In the Image Location
field (top left) you will see the name of your graphic file preceded
by a string of characters. This represents the mapped location of your
file.
- To embed the image in the email body, click OK.
OR
- To link to the image rather than embed it (and subsequently
keep the file size of the message smaller), continue with the following
steps
|
 |
|
Because only you can read the contents of your H: drive, follow
these steps to convert this string to a web URL.
- Drag the mouse to select all these characters: file:///H/PUBLIC.WWW/
- Replace the selected characters with the URL of your personal Oakton
web directory on servercc.
- For Oakton employees, type http://servercc.oakton.edu/~username/
Example of complete strings, including file name: http://servercc.oakton.edu/~jsmith/logo.gif
http://servercc.oakton.edu/~jdoe/images/pic3.jpg
- Check the box for "Leave Image at the Original Location."
- Click OK. The image should now appear in the body of your message.
