Netscape Messenger
Creating a Personal Address Book

Messenger allows each user to keep a separate list of addresses for individuals that he might contact frequently. These addresses can be a mix a Oakton and non-Oakton people. If you open the Netscape Address Book (either while creating a message or by clicking on the Communicator menu, you'll find the Personal Address Book is listed on the drop menu along with the other directories (Oakton College-wide directory, etc.). It is already set-up and ready for you to add names & addresses into it.

It is also from this "Personal Address Book" that you can create mailing lists.

There are several ways to add names to your Personal Address Book.

Method One:
  1. In the main Messenger window, view a message sent to you by someone you would like to add
  2. Click on Message on the Menu bar
  3. In the Message menu (which should now be showing), click on Add Sender To Address Book
  4. Choose "Sender" to add just the person who sent you the message; choose "All" to add the sender and all the other people who received the message.

Method Two:
  1. Click on the Communicator Menu
  2. Select Address Book
  3. Search for an address
  4. Select an address from the results list on the right
  5. Drag the address from the results list to "Personal Address Book" on the left
Method Three:
  1. In the main Messenger window, view a message sent to you by someone you would like to add.
  2. Left click on the name/address of the sender (or any of the other recipients)

Some of the above methods will pop up an address card like the one shown here.
If a card does not pop up, you can go into your Personal Address Book, double-left click on an address and bring it up for editing. With the card in view, you can fill in additional details or make corrections (such as updating someone's email address or contact information).

Method Four (Adding someone who isn't in any of the directories or who hasn't sent you mail):

  1. Click on the Communicator Menu
  2. Select Address Book
  3. Click on the New Card button on the toolbar (this will produce a blank card like the one illustrated above)
  4. Fill in the name and email address (& any other information you feel important) in the spaces provided
  5. Click OK
