Netscape Messenger
Creating a Signature File

A Signature File is basically an independent text file that Messenger will locate and tag onto the end of any email messages you send out. Usually it would contain information on how the recipient may contact you.
A typical example would look like this:

Bill Gates
CEO, Microsoft, Inc.
bgates@microsoft.com
(800) 555-1212 (ask for "Sparky")
Some people additionally will use a Signature File to distribute words of wisdom. Remember, now, you're at work.

For a variety of reasons, it is best to save this file in ASCII (.txt) format. Windows Notepad will save it this way as the default.

Creating Your Signature File:

  1. Start Notepad (In NT/'95, find it by going to Programs then Accessories)
  2. Type your signature file
  3. Save the file as ASCII text in your H: Drive as H:\netscape\mail\signature.txt
  4. Go to your Messenger Mail Window by clicking on the envelope icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen.
  5. Click on Edit
  6. Click on Preferences
  7. Click on Identity:
  8. Put the name and path (same as step 3 above) of your file in the Signature File box
  9. Click on OK
