Overview IT/User Support provides assistance to departments and employees in creating web pages and Online courses. Here you'll find a guide to the help we provide plus some of the resources we use, such as templates, links to helper programs, image collections, and online tutorials..
But for starters, an overview of the Oakton web possibilities:
Individual Pages:
All employees with a network login account (and credit class students -- see the For Students section for details) have space set aside on one of the Oakton servers for posting web pages. This space can be used for personal home pages, posting class materials, etc., in accordance with the College technology policies. Employees are expected to maintain these pages as their own, though IT will provide development assistance for those wishing to post materials of college interest, such as syllabi. Introductory workshops are offered several times a semester and instructional materials are available elsewhere in this section.Official College Pages (www.oakton.edu)
The main public college web site hosts pages for information about the college, official department/program pages, interactive services and related materials. Department pages can be developed as a joint effort between IT and a representative of a department. Each department is responsible for updating content to its pages but since direct access to the main server is currently limited to IT, updates will have to be submitted through us. Department pages should be structured in a manner consistent with the rest of the site and should meet essential accessibility standards. While it is common for departments to utilize students to develop pages (often as class projects), it is strongly recommended that IT be involved early and regularly in the design process.Online Classes and supplemental programs for web-enhanced classes:
Full-online, hybrid online/on-campus classes are created by (or adapted by) Oakton faculty after discussing their proposals with the GOST committee and gaining approval from the Vice President for Academic Affairs. IT can provide one-on-one assistance in development. Online classes are normally hosted on the online.oakton.edu server and generally will use WebCT for class management software.Normal face-to-face (F2F) classes can also be web-enhanced, using WebCT, the instructor's Oakton web page space, or even publisher site access. Consult with an IT Specialist regarding your best options.
Faculty have direct access to their WebCT materials on the "elearn.oakton.edu" server. Faculty and students can link to WebCT via the MyOakton My Classes channel.
More information about full-online courses is available at http://www.oakton.edu/distancelearning. You may also contact Soda Parker, Gary Newhouse, or Dann Foster for additional advising.
