EMPLOYER DATABASES

Big Book
Contains the names, address, and phone numbers of hundreds of thousands of businesses throughout the country. You can search by category, state, and city. Big Book can be useful for job interviews: By selecting a particular company, you will see a detailed map of the area near the business, with the company's exact location highlighted.

EDGAR Database of Corporate Information
Also known as the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system, this is the electronic filing arm of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). All publicly traded companies, and many others, are required by law to file certain documents with the SEC.

Monster Company Boulevard
Contains "online brochures" for 350 employers worldwide. To narrow, you can search by geographic location. Each company's profile includes information on products and services, benefits, and corporate culture and environment. Some profiles include a link that allows you to search for job opportunities in a particular company.

Hoover's Business Resources
Provides profiles for over 9,800 companies, including information on company officers, annual sales, and number of employees. Each company profile even allows you to search the Web for references to the specific company.

BizWeb
Their slogan is "We scour the Internet for company and product information so you won't have to". Companies are categorized and listed by the goods or services they provide.

Lycos Small Business
You can search for information on over 900,000 public and private companies. Provides address, phone number, Web site link, annual sales, company trade names, employee size, and more.

JobStar: Job Search Guide
California based Web site with an excellent section on negotiating salary and links to salary surveys; also provides information on resumes, and how to work the hidden job market. Originally began as a project of the Bay Area Library System. Extensive job listings and salary information for the California job market.

One Source
Illinois Department of Employment Security resources for information about the state's labor market. Visit all of the resources to look for a job, and explore occupations.

Vault
The insider career network - distills opinions expressed by employees and former employees on company culture. Links to articles about a given company and provides a message board where employees can express opinions regarding the company. In addition, provides job listings and industry summaries.
