How much does counseling at Oakton cost, and how many sessions are available?

Individual Counseling
The average number of sessions is six, but counselors and students work together to determine the appropriate number of sessions — with the understanding that Oakton offers short-term counseling only. (Referrals for long-term counseling can be provided.) The maximum number of individual sessions (per academic year) is 12. Personal counseling is free, but clients must be enrolled at Oakton to be eligible.

Group Counseling
There are no group counseling session limits, but there are a limited number of group types. As with all counseling services, group counseling is free.

Not all student problems can be treated at Oakton. In that case, community resources can be identified.

Do you prescribe medication?
No. Oakton does not provide psychiatric services. However, if psychiatric services are indicated for a student, counselors will explore treatment options in the community.

Do you provide couple's counseling?
No. But if couple’s counseling is indicted for a student, counselors will explore treatment options in the community.

Do you provide phone counseling?
No. Oakton provides in-person counseling only.

Why do most people usually see a counselor?
Many people seek counseling because they need help managing the challenges we all experience at one time or another. Seeking outside help from a trained professional is a way to work through a difficult time. Oakton offers this service because most people do hit some rough patches in college.
