Placement Test Schedule

New students must submit an Oakton admission application to the Enrollment Center before testing. No appointment is necessary, but seating is limited. Bring a pen and pencil, a photo I.D., and your Oakton I.D. number. Test results are valid for two years.

 Writing

Tests will begin promptly at the times listed below.  The writing test is 75 minutes.  Late arrivals will not be admitted. Results will be available 2 to 3 business days after testing and can be retrieved from your MyOakton account.

Reading

You must take your reading placement test in a computer lab.  The test is an untimed, adaptive test administered on computer; allow about one hour.  You will receive your results when you complete the test.  Late arrivals will not be admitted.  No dictionaries are allowed.

Math

You must take the math placement test in a computer lab.  The test is an untimed, adaptive test administered on computer.  An on-screen calculator is provided.  You will able to choose either a simple or scientific calculator. You will receive your results when you complete the test.

These tests are prerequisites for your first math or English course.

 

IF YOU HAVE ACT SCORES, YOU MAY USE THEM FOR PLACEMENT:

  • Official ACT reports must be submitted to the Enrollment Center.
  • With a score on the ACT English test of 20 or higher, you will be placed in English 101 and are exempt from the Oakton writing placement test. 
  • With a score on the ACT Reading test of 20 or higher, you are exempt from the Oakton reading placement test unless the Compass Reading  test is required for a limited enrollment program.
  • If you graduated from the Glenbrook, Niles, Evanston Township, Northridge Prep, or Maine high schools, contact the math advisor at mathplace@oakton.edu or call 847-376-7110, for the option of direct placement into a math course.
